Hua Ting Steamboat: A New Addition to Claymore Connect (Media Tasting)

I posted about Mon Bijou, which is located at Claymore Connect, in August. The reason why I am bringing this up is because a new restaurant has opened its doors right next door and it is none other than Hua Ting Steamboat.

This Cantonese style steamboat is the sister restaurant to Orchard Hotel’s Hua Ting Restaurant. Over here, you can find traditional and nourishing soup bases and premium ingredients.

There is a wide variety of sauces for you to customise or choose from. As usual, I started mixing my own sauce with my favourite condiments like fried onions and chilli oil. However, after trying some of the pre-made sauces, I realised I should have just stuck to the belachan which was perfect as it is.

Ordering is conveniently done through an iPad. It is really to make your choices with the pictures for reference.

Tanyoto Hotpot @ Liang Court

I am a huge fan of steamboats, especially 麻辣 (ma la), which translates to numbingly spicy. My mum had been raving about the 麻辣 soup at Tanyoto Hotpot @ Liang Court, Clake Quay for a while now and because of all the more affordable steamboat options around, I had never gotten to try theirs.

However, just recently, my mum made reservations for my family to have a hotpot dinner at Tanyoto Hotpot. In spite of the Japanese sounding name, the restaurant is from Sichuan, China. The main dining area is on the first floor and we were given a private room on the second floor to dine in.

Tanyoto Hotpot utilises an iPad ordering system, like many restaurants nowadays. The menu can be viewed in either Chinese or English and food items are clearly organised into different categories.

Shi Li Fang Steamboat @ Orchard Central

Steamboat is one of my favourite types of food. It is great if you are eating alone, or in a group. It is also good for rainy days, when all you want is just something hot. Furthermore, it gives me an illusion of actually cooking, which I am horrible at.

I can never resist 麻辣 (ma la), an oily and extremely spicy sauce/soup that numbs your senses. It is kind of masochistic, but the more my lips burn and my nose run, the better! It definitely helps to have ice water on the side.

My mum introduced Shi Li Fang to me, as they had a special promotion going on. There was a 50% off on all seafood and meat items all day! In addition, their set lunches are going for only $9.90 (U.P. $22) and they come with a soup base and drink of your choice!

Best of all, they have something special that I have not seen at other steamboat restaurants yet.

Manbok Chinatown Korean BBQ & Steamboat Buffet Restaurant

This is going to be a very short post! School has just started so I am still getting into the swing of things, making it difficult to take time out to blog.

Sis and I checked out Manbok Chinatown Korean BBQ Buffet Restaurant during the weekend. It is a stone’s throw away from Chinatown MRT Station and it scored well on Hungrygowhere.

The restaurant offers both marinated and non-marinated meat, like pork collar, chuck tender, chicken thigh and chicken breast. On top of that, they also serve cooked food like jap chae (Korean glass noodles) and ddeokbokki (Korean rice cakes), not to forget the typical steamboat offerings of ramen, vegetables, etc.

Fatty Choo International Steamboat Buffet

Just a few days ago, my mum noticed that there is a buffet place at West Coast Plaza which is quite affordable, so she brought us down to try it. It costs only $18.80+ for a weekday lunch buffet. What’s more, you can have a choice of up to two soups (yuan yang style where a steamboat is split into two halves). Other than the usual tom yum and chicken soup, they offer Japanese bonito and a more local flavour, bak kut teh.

On the way there, I did some research. Apparently their BKT soup base did not receive any rave reviews and patrons usually opt for one of the other three soups. Another thing I found out was that Chef Choo was from Straits Cafe @ Rendezvous and was responsible for the yummy nonya laksa, and that I can expect to taste the laksa at the buffet! Continue reading
