Dad’s Birthday at Ginzawa @Palais Renaissance


Since dad has been cutting down on his intake of red meat, sis and I had to resort to bringing him to a place with his second greatest food love–chirashi don–for his birthday. Having researched on restaurants serving good chirashi don and striking off those we have tried, Ginzawa at Palais Renaissance Mall came highly recommended by my sis.


Other than being known for the location of David Gan’s hair salon, Passion, I do not think many have ventured into the mall, seeing that there are bigger ones in town. At least it was the case for me. It was a weekend when we visited and the mall was rather vacant.

My family and I ordered from Ginzawa’s Set Lunch Menu, which came with a main course, miso soup, steamed egg and ice cream. Also, for an additional $5, we could add on either an order of salmon sashimi or a California roll.

The chawanmushi (steamed egg) here is one of the better ones I have had. It came with more broth than other chawanmushis and the broth was slightly sweet (reminded us of teriyaki sauce). The egg itself was soft, silky and just melt-in-your-mouth. Two thumbs up!

[Newly Opened] Nobiro Japanese Restaurant & Sake Bar @ Faber

Nobiro Japanese Restaurant & Sake Bar, a month old Japanese restaurant, is located at Faber Drive, next to Buck Tile St. Cafe. The range of items available on the menu is quite wide, with everything from fresh seasonal sashimi air-flown from Japan to noodles and tempura. Also, Chef Kikuchi has a special blackboard where he updates it with weekly specials.

Sashimi Salad ($14), served with nori (seaweed) and wasabi, is a chef’s recommendation. This mixed sashimi salad, is deceptive because the fresh sashimi is buried under all the greens! It was only when we tossed it that we realised how much sashimi there was! This made me wish that there were more greens to even it out a little (this is a good “complaint”).

Sashimi Platter ($50), featuring six kinds of sashimi. The sashimi is indeed fresh and nicely presented, just that it was not as thickly cut as some other Japanese restaurants in Singapore.

Chotto Matte: Sushi, Sashimi and Yakitori (Media Tasting)


If you are love a good food scene and constantly keep your ear to the ground, you will be well-acquainted with the name of this Japanese restaurant ‘Chotto Matte’. The meaning behind this recognisable Japanese term is actually ‘to wait a moment’ and the people behind this restaurant believe that the food is good enough to deserve a moment’s wait.




This restaurant, noted for its sushi, sashimi and yakitori, is tucked in one of the shophouses along Blair Road, just a stone’s throw away from the famous cafe Strangers’ Reunion.

Backed by its co-owner Jeff Ong who is responsible for Torii, an outstanding yakitori restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, and helmed by Chef Roy Chee, previously Executive Head Chef of Standing Sushi Bar, Chotto Matte presents a comprehensive menu rarely found in Japanese restaurants.

With such an endorsement, we looked forward to a well-executed meal of both raw and cooked items.

Tatsuya @ Goodwood Park Hotel


It is a family tradition to find a restaurant with good reviews, serving the birthday boy/girl’s favourite food and to bring the person there on their birthday. As my parents were in Italy, it was up to me to bring my sis for her birthday meal.

I celebrated my sister’s birthday at Tatsuya at Goodwood Park Hotel, as it serves her cherished chirashi don. What is exceptionally cool about the restaurant is that you get to sit in front of the chefs preparing your food for you!




Watching chefs at work definitely trumps any other way of passing time while waiting for the food to be served!
