I found Oak Room Restaurant & Bar through Chope, which is my favourite restaurant booking site. The restaurant is located a short walk from Novena MRT Station, in a hotel so entrenched in 80s decor that I felt like I was caught in a time warp. The decor of the restaurant (thankfully) was in total contrast to the feel of the hotel, as its modern interior belied its cuisine.
Oak Room set up shop on 18 May 2016 and is opened for business from Monday to Saturday. Executive Chef Darrence and Sous Chef Bong have put together a comprehensive menu specialising in seafood and charcoal-grilled dishes.
Jamon Serrano ($28). 18 months aged Jamon Serrano on toast, which was crunchy and reminded me of biscotti. I loved cured meat, and this was first-rate! The taste was rich, and aroma was intense.
Mushroom Soup ($10). The soup was smooth and creamy, but I found $10 to be a tad expensive for the portion.
Grilled Spring Chicken, served with re-cured Parma ham. This did not come with a price as it was not on the menu, but a Chef’s Special, which he usually serves as one of the eight courses at The Chef’s Table.
From The Charcoal Grill
UK Kurobuta Pork Chop ($30), served with bacon sauce, apple chutney and Parmesan mash. Pork would have never been a choice for me if there is chicken, beef or pasta on the menu. However, I enjoyed everything about this dish, except for the mash, which was kind of tasteless.
Prime USDA ($45), the highlight of the meal for me. 365 days grain fed 28 days dry aged 250g rib eye, served with Parmesan mash, baby spinach and natural jus. Beautifully cut and perfect doneness. I wished I had more space in my stomach for this.
If you have a bigger craving, go for the Prime USDA Tomahawk ($228), which weighs about 1.5kg.
Dessert Platter (from left):
- Sticky Medjool Date Pudding (served warm)
- Crème brûlée, served with passionfruit pulp and coulis
All three desserts were delicious. If you have the full portion, the sticky date pudding would come with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.
