Island Cafe & Bar, established in 1993, has recently gone through a revamp and now boasts a brand new interior! The cafe located at TANGS at Tang Plaza, in the heart of Orchard Road, serves signature local and regional favourites, in addition to after-hour cocktails. With the contemporary design and open space, it is definitely a great place to relax and hang out with friends.
Other than the great ambience, what I really like about Island Cafe & Bar is the huge servings of food! My family and I ordered four dishes (one main course, two small plates and one greens) and one dessert and we were very full at the end of the meal.
Japanese Caesar ($17). Romaine and iceberg lettuce, seaweed, miso dressing, crispy flying fish roe, egg and croutons. Personally, this was pretty normal and the flying fish roe was not very substantial. I would prefer some meat to go along with the salad, but adding chicken would require an additional $3.
Fried Chicken Wings ($12), marinated and deep fried, then tossed with lemongrass and lime leaves. I felt that the meat did not really have any taste and even the occasional leaf was not very remarkable. I will not order this again.
Tahu Telor ($14). This was a marked improvement from the previous dish. Carrot, cucumber and a tall tower of fried tahu. Unlike other misshapen tahu telors, I have had, this one was actually formed quite nicely. Also, there was enough sauce to go around.
One of the two signature dishes that the Island Cafe is famous for–Island Jumbo Prawn Laksa ($24). Rich spicy coconut gravy, thick rice vermicelli, prawns, cockles, fishcakes and quail eggs. A must try! My mum found it too creamy, but the rest of us liked it and finished this really quickly!
Salted Caramel Cake ($10), from the selection of cakes at the counter. The moment I walked into the cafe, my attention was drawn to the sweet treats displayed at the counter. I asked the staff what he would recommend and as luck would have it, his recommendation coincided with what I would have chosen in the first place! This cake was served warm and it was the best of both worlds with salty and sweet flavours.
