Once again, I am back at The Usual Place, this time around at the invitation of Sookie (one of the owners) to try their newly launched Weekend Brunch Menu which was introduced just before Chinese New Year.
What I love about this cafe is that the prices are still kept affordable, making good food accessible to the masses. Unlike some of the all day breakfast places where prices average around $18-22, the price range is between $9-16.
I was told to give their Yuzu Mint Fruit Cooler ($4) another try. According to Sookie, instead of getting mint leaves from Malaysia, they are now supporting local producers and this abundance of fresh mint leaves you see is from a local hydroponics farm.
One of the more interesting additions to the menu has to be Cauliflower Fritters ($10.90). The cauliflower is fried and then served with beans, half-boiled egg, bacon and corn stew, with guacamole toast on the side. This dish took them a few tries to perfect and came highly recommended.
It is not something that you usually see here in the local brunch scene and is indeed worth trying. We were warned that taste can be quite subjective, but it was a hit among my family members.
Eggs & Cheese Benedict ($9.90). Do not expect things to be ordinary around here. Replacing the usual hollandaise sauce, we have cheese sauce, just like the ones you dip your nachos in. The end product… a Mexican styled Eggs Benedict!
My favourite dish has to be Steak & Egg ($15.90). This dish is unbelievably economical! Where else can you find prime striploin, beef croquette, crispy tots, sunny side and mixed green at such a low price?
Last but not least, French Toast Stick ($8.90). The toast sticks are fried and served with caramelised bananas, pistachio crumbs and caramel sauce. I found the dish a tad too try and it would help if there was more caramel sauce to dip the sticks in. This dish reminded me of winter in Finland, especially with the icing sugar and wallpaper in the background.
