[Newly Opened] Mon Bijou: A Taste of France @ Claymore Connect (Media Tasting)

Mon Bijou, an authentic French bistro has opened at Claymore Connect, formerly known as Orchard Hotel Shopping Arcade. Connected to Orchard Hotel through a side door at the lobby, the first tenant you see as you pass through the doorway is Mon Bijou.

The bistro is one of the latest F&B brands by Millennium Hotels and Resorts. Featuring almost everything from appetisers to desserts in its all-day dining menu and takeaway counter, Mon Bijou has something for everyone at all times of the day (within opening hours, of course).

As we awaited for others to arrive at the pre-launch, we got to savour some of the drinks on their menu:

  • Milky Sunrise: Mango ice cream, peach syrup and milk
  • Gold Coast: English Breakfast Tea, rose tea and passionfruit
  • Creamy Grass: Moroccan Mint Tea, mint syrup and milk

Unfortunately, I did not manage to get down all the names and the prices. However, I would strongly recommend Milky Sunrise! It was a winning combination of all three flavours. On the other hand, Creamy Grass was a let down. It looked the nicest and got the most “wows” as it appeared, but it had a strong milky taste and bland mint flavour.

The appetisers were a sight to behold! Here are some that we tried:

  • Caprese Salad ($16) and Summer Greek Salad ($12)
  • Smoked salmon, avocado cucumber on mini olive panini
  • Truffle scrambled eggs on black & white toast
  • Chicken Nuggets with Honey Mustard Sauce ($12)

No complaints about the appetisers. They tasted as good as they looked.

[Newly Opened] The Bakehouse by Carpenter And Cook @ Alexandra Central

If you are a fan of Carpenter And Cook, then you definitely have to check out their new enterprise, The Bakehouse by Carpenter And Cook. Located on the first floor of the newly opened Alexandra Central, on the same site as Park Hotel Alexandra, the cafe serves wood-fired pizzas, pastas, gourmet sandwiches and Carpenter And Cook’s signature pastries. The great thing about this cafe is that it is opened seven days a week!

As you place your order at the counter, you can peruse the selection of pastries available that day. From freshly baked croissants to lemon drizzle loaves, as well as cakes in the glass display, they have plenty to offer for the sweet tooth!

John Crabbie & Co. Traditional Cloudy Lemonade ($6.80). The slightly fizzy lemonade comes with a twist of ginger. A renowned brand in the UK since 1800s, the drink is free from artificial sweeteners, colours and flavours.

Crab Meat Pasta ($16). Crab meat fettuccine in brandy and pink sauce. I was not sure how the tomato cream sauce pasta would turn out, but the ample amount of shredded crab meat together with the al dente pasta was surprisingly good.

The pastas above are different renditions of Aglio Olio ($16). The original pasta comes with mix grilled vegetables, however mum opted for squid and mushrooms and I chose grilled chicken. I ordered less spicy, but I think the next time around, I will order a spicy one!

What I love about this place is that all their pastas are priced at $16 and they are open to customisation, so if you prefer to have a different type of meat or seafood, just let the staff know as you are ordering at the counter.

Carrot Cake ($7.50). As you can see from the picture, the cake is filled with carrots, nuts and pineapples! What a delightfully dense and moist carrot cake.

For my next visit, I intend to try Grandma’s Italian Style Chicken Wings ($5.50) and Wild Mushroom Soup with Truffle ($8). Both items came highly recommended by the staff but we did not have much of an appetite that day.

The Carvery @ Park Hotel Alexandra (Media Tasting)

Have you checked out the new hotel next to IKEA at Alexandra? Shops at Alexandra Central (located on the same site as Park Hotel Alexandra) have also started opening doors like Toast Box and The Bakehouse by Carpenter and Cook. However, the main reason for my visit was to try The Carvery, a restaurant at Park Hotel Alexandra which opened in June 2015, offering a beautiful pool view and top-grade grilled meats.

Just adjacent to The Carvery, is Aqua Luna, an alfresco pool bar situated upon the 25 metre long infinity pool. You can also watch the sunset through the windows as you unwind at the bar. Aqua Luna is currently having an opening offer till 30 September where you can enjoy a second drink at 50% off from noon to 11pm on Sundays to Thursdays and noon to 1am on Fridays, Saturdays, Even of and on Public Holidays.

Now, back to the restaurant. The moment you step out of the elevator on the seventh floor, you can smell the mouth-watering aroma of the restaurant’s premium roasts. The first thing that you will see as you enter The Carvery is the three-metre long meat carving station with an experienced carver ready to serve it up. Besides that, super sharp custom-made designer Laguiole steak knives from France can also be found at the carving station.

The buffet here is actually priced very reasonably for the quality of food:

  • Lunch (noon to 3pm): $38++
  • Dinner (Sundays to Thursdays, 6 to 10pm): $52++
  • Dinner (Fridays and Saturdays, 6 to 10pm): $62++

The roasts available that day were Pork Knuckle, Australian Prime Rib, Herb-Crusted Australian Beef Ribeye and Spit Roasted Chicken. The pork knuckle was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The crackling sound as you bite into it makes it very satisfying. This is best paired with sweet mustard.

The prime rib is dry-aged in-house to intensify its taste and tenderise the meat. It is then lightly seasoned with salt and pepper before slow roasted for about eight hours. Between the two beef cuts, I preferred the ribeye which was very flavourful from the herbs. Also, chef recommended the truffle salt to go along with it, which made the taste more refined.

Beautiful Plated Desserts at Art Art And Away @ Tessensohn Road (Media Tasting)

Art Art And Away, a decorative art retail store and dessert cafe, is located a few minutes’ walk down the street from Farrer Park MRT Station Exit B. The shophouse was relatively easy to find and just a couple of shops from its sister restaurant Hungry Heroes. Similar to the hero-themed shop where the owner’s extensive collection of memorabilia fill the walls, Art Art And Away also has a fun and quirky interior, but teeming with colourful pop art pieces instead.

The food seems to mirror the bright and unique decor as the playful element was also injected into the menu. As you can see from the colourful and eye-catching menu above, Art Art And Away serves a variety of specialty coffee, gourmet tea, cakes, pastries and signature local desserts with a contemporary twist.

Catalunya’s Weekend Brunch with Passion @ Fullerton Pavilion (Media Tasting)

I was delighted to be invited to Catalunya for a weekend brunch tasting by Burpple some time back. I had heard and read many good things about the restaurant but never had an opportunity to try it for myself.

The restaurant is located at The Fullerton Pavilion, which is off Clifford Pier and between One Fullerton and Fullerton Bay hotel. And as you can see from the picture below, the place offers a panoramic view of the bay as well as Marina Bay Sands.

With the expansive floor to ceiling windows, you are able to enjoy the beautiful city backdrop while dining on authentic and contemporary Spanish cuisine. The 4,300 square foot restaurant comfortably seats 120 people and diners may choose to dine indoors or alfresco.

As for the main reason I was there, Catalunya’s Weekend Brunch with Passion is a stunning selection of Spanish food, with everything from cured meats to salads and seafood! The semi-buffet brunch is available every Saturday and Sunday from 12.30 to 3.30pm. There is only one seating for and it is a whole THREE HOURS of indulgence!

In addition to the wide variety of food, if you go for the brunch on the last weekend of the month, you will be entitled to a Bingo Game, where you can get to win dining vouchers at Catalunya. The game really kept each of us diners on our toes!

During weekend brunch, the bar area of Catalunya is transformed into sections of food: Market Selection, Charcuterie, Cheese, Salad, Fish and Fresh Juice.
