The Salon @ Hotel Fort Canning

I was thinking of whether to choose The Salon @ Hotel Fort Canning for one of my Restaurant Week meals when my aunt invited me there for dinner. It is located at the lobby of Hotel Fort Canning and took over what was previously Gattopardo Italian Grill & Pizzabar. Diners will get to enjoy signature Singapore favourites, wood-fired pizzas and other western cuisine at this new pop up restaurant.

The restaurant is big enough to hold both small families and big groups. There were about 20 of us that day, so we were given these two long tables to sit at.

Chunky Fries with Melter Cheddar Cheese ($10). These are actually wedges drizzled with savoury nacho cheese.

As for the little niece and nephew, they had Crispy Battered Fish & Chips ($12) and Chicken Nuggets ($10). Both came with fries and coleslaw.

Seafood Spaghetti in Marinara Sauce ($18). Al dente pasta in tomato based sauce, with fresh prawns, squid and fish, sprinkled with basil leaves and olive oil.

Club Sandwich ($12). Toasted triple layered sandwich with mayonnaise, bacon, chicken, fried egg and tomatoes, served with mesclun salad and potato chips. Huge serving, good for sharing if you are feeling peckish.

Singapore Hokkien Mee ($14). Braised yellow noodles with thick rice noodles with eggs, prawns, squid, streaky pork belly, chives and bean sprouts. TWO THUMBS UP! One of the best hokkien mee I have ever had, whether in a restaurant or at a hawker centre.

Bread & Butter Pudding ($8). An old English family favourite served with vanilla sauce. On the total end of the spectrum from the hokkien mee. This was one of the worst bread and butter puddings, it was too jelly-like.

Warm Chocolate Brownie ($12.50), served with vanilla ice cream. Average but definitely not worth $12.50.

My verdict? Obviously as Singaporeans, we would know where to go for if we are craving for some Singapore specialties and these cost way higher than what we can find at hawker centres and food courts. However, this is fitting for hotel guests who want to try local food but at a comfortable restaurant and not having to travel to different areas to sample them. That said, the hokkien mee here is really awesome!
