Chir Chir Fusion Chicken Factory has opened its flagship outlet in Singapore at 313@Somerset. It is one of the largest chimaek (chicken and beer) franchises in South Korea, with over 100 outlets across Korea, China and Taiwan. ‘Chir Chir’ is pronounced as chi-ruh chi-ruh and it gets its name from the bubbling sound that oil mix when the chicken hits the deep-fryer.
Chir Cream Beer ($13.90 for 350ml). Draught beer topped with freshly whipped cream. This story behind this drink is popular Korean drama Secret Garden’s latte where the main character got foam on the lips which led to a kiss.
Non-Alcoholic Passion Yellow Tok! Tok! ($14.90 per jug). Fizzy flavoured passionfruit mocktail that can be turned into a cocktail with the addition of soju for additional $4. The drink is also really cool as an iSi soda charger is used to fizz the drinks up at the tableside before it is served.
The restaurant also has mini tongs so you do not have to worry about getting your fingers dirty. However, some people would prefer to dig in with their hands.
Honey Grape Salad ($18.90). Green grapes, walnuts, almonds and raisins dressed with ricotta and whipped cream, served with honey and garlic tortillas. Both the ricotta and whipped cream are fresh and made in house. The standard salad comes with two tortillas. I really enjoyed this salad with its seedless grapes and crispy baked tortilla drizzled with honey.
Mango Salad ($11.90). Mixed greens with mangoes, blueberries and yoghurt dressing. The taste of this salad reminds me of the old school prawn fruit cocktail salad with mayonnaise.
Crispy Fried Chicken ($26.90). Fresh chicken marinated for six hours in Chir Chir’s house seasoning, deep-fried and served with salsa and honey mustard. The chicken is battered and fried only upon order, so you have to wait for about eight to 12 minutes for each order during non-peak hours.
The distinguishing factor between Chir Chir and some other Korean fried chicken chains is that it uses only fresh chicken. Furthermore, all its sauces are imported from Seoul to ensure that taste is consistent across all their outlets worldwide.
Garlicky Wings! (in the foreground) and Spicy Wings! ($28.90 for seven drumlets and seven wings). Since this was a tasting session, we had half portions of each. Both chicken wings were deep fried and served with roasted sweet potatoes and fried toppoki (Korean rice cakes). The Garlicky Wings! had minced garlic and fried garlic cloves, while the Spicy Wings! were cooked in spicy chilli sauce.
The Garlicky Wings! were the highlight of the night, everyone loved them! The Spicy Wings! on the other hand were so fiery that we had to gulped down ice water after eating.
Nest Snow ($32.90). Cajun chicken tenders and sweet potato puree in cream sauce with olives and peppers, topped with freshly whipped cream, parmesan, mozzarella and cheddar. This is definitely a unique dish that I have not tried anywhere else. The slightly spicy Cajun tenders went really well with the mashed sweet potato. Also, the cream sauce was like a balm to our tongues after the spicy wings.
Also, as a side note, on the left of the picture, you can see a buzzer. There is a buzzer affixed to each table which you can press to alert the wait-staff.
Spicy BBQ Roasted Chicken ($32.90). Whole chicken marinated for 12 hours then oven-roasted and pan-fried with a fiery BBQ sauce. Due to the complex process of cooking, this takes about 20 minutes to prepare. A tip for you is to peel the salt-baked egg while it is hot, so the shell does not stick to the egg.
Similar to the Passion Yellow Tok! Tok!, this is the Blue Marine version. Although it is blue in colour, the flavour of the drink is green grape! The Tok! Tok! comes in four flavours, so other than the two mentioned, there are also Blue Sky (blue lemonade) and Berry Purple (blueberry and forest berries). Featured is Levi, one of the friendly five bosses of this franchise!
Good news! A second Chir Chir outlet is slated to open at Bedok Point this month!
