It was not easy to find The Mama Shop. When I saw the address stating Old Police Operational Headquarters, I assumed that it was the old building next to Pearls Centre, which has been converted into a students’ hostel. However, shortly after entering, I realised it could not be there.
So it was up to Google Maps to get me there. The cafe is located on the hill, behind the students’ hostel. It was only after I uploaded the picture on Instagram that I found out a shortcut to get there (courtesy of SGFoodonFoot). Once you make it up the hill, the place is relatively easy to find, solely because the place is pretty isolated.
The storefront is really old school, with all the kinds of toys and tidbits on display/ sale that you would find decades ago. Also, the signage and flooring is reminiscent of the past. The dining area is very small, as you can see from the picture, there is only a smattering of tables and chairs around.
We ordered some of the must-tries to share. Food preparation time takes about 15 minutes, so we ordered drinks first to cool us down.
Sparking Limau ($3.50), sparkling lime juice with sour plum, and Mama Iced Kopi ($2.90), iced Traditional Ipoh White Coffee. I am not very sure whether the Sparkling Limau is considered pricey, but I loved it. It was very refreshing, especially in the heat.
Ovomaltine Waffles ($4.90). Fluffy Belgium waffles with chocolate crunchy Ovomaltine spread with sliced strawberries. The waffles here were so-so. If my stomach was bigger, I would have tried their savoury waffles which sounded really interesting.
Messy Messy Nice Nice Mama Burger ($10.90). Juicy and succulent New Zealand beef patty topped with melted Gouda Cheese and caramelised onion mushrooms. This may not look like much, but it is extremely delicious. All three of us thought it was the best out of everything we tried.
Happy Peppy Lobster Burger ($16.90). Canadian lobster chunks and prawns in wasabi mayo sauce.
Luncheon Fries ($8). Generous serving of spam fries presented in a very creative manner. No wastage of the container!
Overall, I must say the service is tip-top. My friend accidentally spilled her coffee and caused a mess, but the staff were quick to respond in the clean-up and even gave her a cup of coffee on the house. In spite of that, this will probably be my only visit there because the place is not very accessible and there are too little tables.
