Singapore Restaurant Week Overview (October 2014)

Untitled

If you have been following my Instagram (@qiuuing), you will know that I had been very busy hopping from one restaurant to the next the whole of last week because it was Restaurant Week here in Singapore. This is definitely my favourite time of the year as it is an excuse for me to try as many restaurants as possible!

Here are the restaurants I have tried this time around:

1. Gaia Ristorante & Bar

page

The thing that really impresses me about Gaia is their awesome service. They are very accommodating and the staff is extremely attentive. I must admit that for the both times I have visited Gaia, the main courses did not blow me away. However, it still remains one of my favourite restaurants to go to because of its ambiance. In addition, their appetisers and desserts are well executed, and they do take care with their presentation.

2. Zafferano

page1

A restaurant promising a 270 degrees view from the 43rd floor, which I did not get to enjoy because all of us were seated near the entrance of the restaurant. Same thing as Gaia, mains were good but nothing to rave about. The pork was slightly dry too. But, their Catalan crème brûlée was one of the best crème brûlées I have ever eaten! I wish I could have more!

3. Ristorante Takada

The dark horse of the lot! One of the new restaurants to participate in Restaurant Week, Ristorante Takada will remain on my must-return list next year. At an affordable rate of $35++, the dinner came with a bread basket, amuse-bouche, appetiser, main course, dessert, petit four and coffee/ tea. Standards were not compromised with the number of dishes. I left the restaurant feeling very satisfied.

4. Table at 7

page4

This was the most disappointing meal that I have ever had in all the Restaurant Weeks I have been to. For about $52 per person for lunch, I got an ox tail soup (which was so run-of-the-mill in terms of both taste and presentation that I did not even bother taking a picture of), flaked mackerel with rice and, apple and rhubarb crumble. My friend tried the mushroom tart instead of the soup and found it alright.

The dessert was the only dish that they pulled off perfectly. The amount for lunch was more than I would have paid for. To make matters worse, I had this the day after Ristorante Takada and this was sadly lacking.

5. Olivia Cassivelaun Fancourt

Olivia Cassivelaun Fancourt had the best overall dining experience in my opinion, both in terms of service and food. The staff was very polite and despite some mishap in our reservations and that they had a function that night, they gave us a private room to dine in. Everything from the start to the finish was one good dish after another. The dessert was totally flawless in its execution and taste.

6. Candlenut

page7

If you have been a regular of Restaurant Week, you would know that it is difficult to get a reservation at this extremely popular restaurant, and it is easy to see why. They deliver tip top Peranakan dishes with the freshest of ingredients. The flavours here are really authentic and it is a good place for family to eat together (with a few meat dishes and white rice).  I really enjoyed my meal here.

7. Arossa Wine & Grill

page8

My second visit to Arossa but it was not as good as I remembered. I loved their Steamed Chicken Roll with Tonnato Sauce. While it might not look like much, but the saltiness of anchovies, capers and tuna went really well with the chicken. I wish they had served their steak, but we got beef cheek instead, which was too dry and needed more sauce than was given.

Arossa Wine & Grill

That is all for this year! I cannot wait for next year to come!
